Recon Journey is the complete reconnaissance
solution for applications requiring number plate recognition for traffic
monitoring. The data collected by Recon Journey is supported directly
by the Journey Stat Consolidator allowing captured information to
be integrated into a relational database. Building
on the existing robust video capture and analysis software developed
by Actis Media, Recon Journey extends functionality to allow:
Calculation
of journey time
Incident
detection
Averages
of time/speed
Speed
violation detection
Multiple
composite results
Detection
of number plates
Real-time
check against small or huge databases (in excess of 100 million
entries)
Multiple
reject/accept/action lists
Remote
or local information access
Storage
and/or transmission of triggered video sequence and/or images
Wide
tolerance for angle and skew of plate
Configurable
plate formatting for both local and international support
Using the powerful phoenix engine, Recon Journey
delivers efficient and robust number plate recognition ability to
both local and remote sites. Number plate information is available
for use in data file creation but can also be used to trigger events
that may involve picture or video capture. Plate information can
also be filtered again inclusion or exclusion lists in real time.
The main use of the gathered information is to construct a data
model of the passing traffic.

As number plates are scanned and each point along
the designated route, data is produced in the form of data files.
This data is then transferred in real time, by means of batch transfer
or trickle fed for automated import into the relational database.
The collected information can then be reviewed and acted upon by
any standard SQL query.
Recon Journey data is not limited to a sequential
journey configuration. As can be seen from the diagram below. In
this example, there is more than one route to consider to point
2 and above. This configuration is typical to many applications
of journey study. The system employs additional processing to the
data as it is imported into the database to allow complex models
of the data to be realised.
The process that analyses the incoming data and
imports it into the database is called the consolidator. The consolidator
works from a flexible set of rules that allows various combinations
of journeys to be matched and stored in the database. The process
of matching the records from various sites along the required route
must allow for data being imported at differing times and data may
not be in the order in which it was captured. Because of the unique
identification of the data files, this process is completed efficiently
and quickly.
The benefits of consolidation of the data can
be seen when it is queried. Extracting information from a relational
database can be complex if records must be matched before they are
useful. With consolidated data from Recon Journey, queries are fast
enough to give a pseudo real-time reading of incoming data. Extraction
of the consolidated data is also greatly improved in efficiency
when consolidated. This means backup or extraction to other processes
is achieved at maximum speed.
